Youths of Today, Knowledge Workers of Tomorrow

Summary : As we prepare for the knowledge economy, what are the future jobs and key skills that are required to stay relevant.

YOUTHS OF TODAY, KNOWLEDGE WORKERS OF TOMORROW
The youths of today will make up the workforce of the new economy of tomorrow. More and more of these young people are finding that what they learn in school may not be enough to keep them working for their whole lives. New technologies and economic globalisation are pushing change that demands lifelong education.
What direction is the employment market likely to take? Which sectors will flourish, which will decline? In the recent report of the Economic Review Committee (ERC), it was revealed that Singapore will become ?A Globalised, Entrepreneurial and Diversified Economy?. This means Singapore?s economy will be connected to China, India and Southeast Asia competing with the US and EU. Singapore will become a creative and innovative society, always eager to try out new ideas. In terms of the emerging industries, manufacturing and services sectors will grow in importance.
While manufacturing will become more knowledge- and research-intensive, the services sector will be upgraded and expanded.
As a young Singaporean at the crossroads of your academic career path, what is in store for you in the future, in terms of jobs? Whether you?re in ITE, polytechnic or university, you will eventually be affected. Below is a summary of the future jobs in the manufacturing and services sectors, as well as some of the requirements for such jobs.
